$10 Contribution: This is a public service program. However, a $10 contribution is appreciated to help pay for books and refreshments. It is important to pre-register to help us order enough books and food.

You will be asked to choose four sessions when you register. (You are able to choose different sessions at Senior Law Day in the event you change your mind, but this will give us a general idea of the interest in the programs so we can plan accordingly.)

WORKSHOP #1. Adult Protection and Elder Abuse
Workshop Time: 8:00 – 8:50 am – This Session repeats at: 11:00 am
What is “Elder Abuse?” Do you know it when you see it? This informative program will help you identify the various forms elder abuse takes in today’s society, from mistreatment and physical abuse to self-neglect. Some estimates indicate that as much as 2/3’s of elder abuse is caused by family! Everyone needs to know what the County Adult Protection Services Team can and cannot do to help.

WORKSHOP #2. Assisted Living and Nursing Home Issues
Workshop Time: 8:00 – 8:50 am – This Session repeats at: 11:00 am
Experienced ombudsmen from the Denver Regional Council of Governments cover the rights of residents in both nursing homes and assisted living facilities and the various means to protect them. What is the role of the ombudsmen? Who regulates and licenses care facilities? How do you find an effective advocate for yourself, your spouse, or your parents? Who you gonna call?
WORKSHOP #3. Consumer and Investment Fraud Prevention

Do you know the safest way to pay your bills? Do you know how investment fraud is commonly committed and how to avoid investment scams? What are the 3 R’s of Fraud Protection? Join Amy Nofziger from AARP Foundation’s ElderWatch, and Rebecca Franciscus from the Securities and Exchange Commission for an energetic, interactive presentation to answer these questions and test your consumer and investment fraud knowledge. It doesn’t matter if you are 55 or 95; this is an opportunity to learn about the latest scams affecting the 50+ population. Learn how to keep you and your loved ones’ hard earned money safe!

WORKSHOP #4 DNR Orders Advance Directives and End of Life Issues

Do you have questions about advance medical directives? Do you friends and family know what you want? Unfortunately, only 20% of us have our medical powers of attorney and living wills in place. Michael Kirtland, chapter author and expert on advance medical directives will clarify the confusion which surrounds the real world scenarios to help you make sure the right person is making decisions for and carries out your wishes.
WORKSHOP #5. Disposition of Final Remains

From traditional funerals to cremation to the green burials, what are the options available? Do we have the right or ability to impose upon others our wishes for what we want to have done with our bodies when we are no longer using them? Knowledgeable experts will educate you on the possibilities and pitfalls in Colorado.
WORKSHOP #6. Estate Planning: Wills, Trusts & Your Property
Workshop Time: 8:00 – 8:50 am -This Session repeats at: 11:00 am
Mark Masters walks you through the wonderful world of wills, trusts, and basic estate planning. Learn about the probate process in Colorado and why avoiding probate is not always necessary. You also will learn about joint tenancy, living trusts, and financial powers of attorney.
WORKSHOP #7. Hanging Up the Car Keys for Good

Does someone you know drive you crazy? Are you worried about your own driving? And how do we know when it really is time to say enough? Your doctor or your spouse or children might be telling you it’s no longer safe to drive. You might even get a letter from the Department of Motor Vehicles, which would still be better than getting a ticket. Find out from experts what some of the road signs are that tell us when it is time to stop and hang up the car keys, and what programs are available if we don’t think we’re ready yet.
WORKSHOP #8. Hospice, Palliative Care, and Other End of Life Issues

Just what is hospice? And how do you pronounce “palliative” care anyway? (And what is it?) Come and find out. Sadly, many doctors don’t want to talk about hospice—or don’t know what this quality care can provide. Coverage is available through Medicare as well as Medicaid. Can you still be fed when you’re in hospice? Can you change your mind? Who decides when it’s time? Can your doctor or family override your wishes for end-of-life care? This presentation will introduce you to practical things we all need to know.

The goal of every Aging Adult is to maintain her or his independence at home and not move into an assisted living facility or nursing home. However, how can you best achieve this goal? How do you create a safe and accessible living environment? Learn how to evaluate your home for present and future physical abilities and needs, how to obtain assistance in your home and how to fund your in-home care.

Whether we live another five months or 45 years, we can empower ourselves with choices that enhance the rest of our lives. Judith Haynes inspires the audience with stories of how to best communicate wishes, honor one’s past, recall life’s stories and leave a richer legacy of their life for loved ones. Her positive message explores the power in integrating our past to celebrate this life, this journey—and live each day more fully now.
WORKSHOP #11 Avoiding the Court and the Legal System: Mediation and Conflict Resolution

Court costs thousands! Join us for a discussion of the family disputes that arise when life changes happen. Experienced professional mediators will discuss options for resolving family conflict other than going to court.

You’ve seen retired actors advertising reverse mortgages on TV. Maybe you should listen to someone who knows what she’s talking about. Paulette Wisch is co-author of the chapter on Reverse Mortgages in the Senior Law Handbook. She is one of the most experienced lending specialists in the state when it comes to reverse mortgages. WORKSHOP #13 The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, & Alzheimer’s

What are the differences between Alzheimer’s, other dementias and normal memory loss due to aging? Learn about them and the Alzheimer’s disease process, current treatments and support services for both the person with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, and the caregiver which are offered by the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Find out what services, programs and benefits are available to vets and their families presented by an experienced professional.  Nursing homes, contract facilities, health care, hospitalizations and information on the Improved Pension with Aid and Attendance to help families with the cost of health care will be addressed in this program.

WORKSHOP #15  Trust Planning for Individuals wtih Disabilities or on Public Benefits

Do you or your loved one have a Special (Supplemental) Needs Trust? Have you planned for the future of your disabled love one while keeping in mind their eligibility for Public Benefits? Has your loved one “come into money” through an inheritance, personal injury settlement or sale of a home? Come and learn from the Colorado Fund for People with Disabilities (CFPD) about how Special Needs Trusts can be utilized to meet the needs of you or your loved one. CFPD has seventeen years experience in serving people with disabilities through Special Needs Trust.

Learn what you need to know as a savvy consumer about this rapidly evolving area.

An overview of Medicaid is provided by John Campbell, an experienced probate and elder law attorney. It is impossible to cover everything you need to know in the limited time available, but this session will get you started in the right direction.
WORKSHOP #18 Powers of Attorney, and Guardianship & Conservatorship

Experienced elder law attorneys Marco Chayet and Tom Rodriguez explain the benefits and pitfalls of financial powers of attorney and medical powers of attorney—when to use them and when to avoid them. They will also explain how guardianships and conservatorships work, how they differ from powers of attorney, and how court involvement may offer protection not otherwise available. Time permitting, basic estate planning will also be covered.
WORKSHOP #19 Medicare 101 – Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers

An overview of the “Alphabet Soup of Medicare.” What is Part A, B, C, and everyone’s favorite, Part D? Most of us have no idea how Medicare works for us, let alone what Medicare will not cover. (Hint: You may also want to sit in on the program for Medicaid). Learn from one of the few experts in Colorado who thoroughly understands the intricacies of Medicare. There will be plenty of time for audience questions.
WORKSHOP #20 Dealing with Trusts & Trustees -   NEW!

So what does a trustee do anyway? Professional bank trustees will define for you just what a trust is and the different kinds of trusts that are available. The trustees will also explain how trust administration works and how beneficiaries can request and obtain funds from the trust. Lastly, the trustees will explain how a trust will operate if your health declines and you can no longer make your own decisions.

WORKSHOP #22 Mortality, Morality & Honor: Choices at the End of Life  -NEW!

Dr. Charles Hamlin, a retired hand surgeon and national board member of Compassion & Choices, will present a brief history of the end-of-life “movement,” the role of the federal government in this area of health care, and how Colorado and its laws fits into this landscape. The talk is intended as a philosophic reminder of the circle of life and is meant as a reminder to all to stay young and die young as late as possible, and plan on it.

24 Planning For Your Pets  -  NEW!

What would happen to your pet if something happened to you? Attorney Casey S. Cassinis will show you how a pet trust can help the average pet parent protect their furry companion. She’ll discuss everything from pet trust basics to tips for selecting the best caregiver for your animal. You’ll also learn from one of Betty White’s favorite charities how your pet trust can be used to make a charitable gift to benefit animals for generations to come.

WORKSHOP # 25 The Village Movement and Your Community: Neighbors Helping Neighbors to Age in Place

Learn how age-in-community neighborhoods, or villages, enable seniors to remain in their own homes as they age, supported by an intentional community of neighbors helping neighbors. Typically structured as a non-profit (501c3), a village’s members pay reasonable dues and enjoy access to a network of volunteers for transportation and services; trustworthy vendors; and social or educational events. The first entity of this kind was Boston’s Beacon Hill Village, established in 2001. Their pioneering example has already spawned more than 50 villages across the US, including Washington Park Cares in Denver. Since opening in 2008, WPC has grown to 140 members. Arnie Snyder, WPC co-founder and board member, will describe what a village is; what are the benefits to members and their families; and how to start a village in your neighborhood.

Learn about the current trend of providing lifelong learning opportunities for seniors. We will review the latest scientific understanding of how the brain ages and the implications for providers of senior care. Examine how the traditional model of the brain has changed to one that includes far more flexibility and capacity for growth than previously believed. Exercising your mind lowers the risk of dementia/Alzheimer’s disease. Learn what types of activities provide the most benefit.
WORKSHOP #27. Taking Care of Your Pets and Pets Taking Care of You   – NEW!

This session will focus on arranging care for your pets in the event that you are hospitalized or pass away, and how pets, such as service and therapy dogs, can help senior citizens both physically and emotionally.

This presentation will focus on the legal steps you should take after the loss of a loved one. Probate and elder law attorney, Aaron Evans of Benson & Case, will walk you through the steps, including: Explanation of the probate process and the rules specific to Colorado; Differences between a formal and informal probate; The duties and responsibilities of the personal representative; Potential liability issues and pitfalls; Ways to avoid probate.
